What the house tells us before we arrive
No two parts of the county give us quite the same job, and the age of the house usually tells us more than the town does. Before we arrive, it helps to know which of these your home sits closest to.
Victorian and Edwardian terraces fill the older streets of Derby, the lace-era roads of Long Eaton and much of Ilkeston and Heanor. Kitchens there are usually narrow rooms at the back, so the questions are how to get the most from a galley run, and whether to open up into the back room, which normally means a steel beam and building regulations sign-off.
Stone houses and mill cottages are the rule in Belper, Wirksworth, Matlock and Ambergate. Walls are rarely flat or square and floors can fall away, so worktops and end panels are scribed to the wall and every unit is levelled on its own. Some of these homes are listed or in a conservation area, which can affect vents, windows and anything structural.
Between-the-wars and post-war semis are common in Allestree, Chaddesden and the outer parts of many towns on this page. The original kitchen tends to be small, and taking out the wall to the dining room is the change most people ask about.
Newer estates such as Oakwood usually have square rooms and concrete floors, which make fitting quicker. The planning there is about space: tall units, corner storage, and whether an island will fit without blocking the way through.
Which council covers your home
A like-for-like kitchen in the same room rarely needs permission. Taking out a structural wall, moving the kitchen into an extension or working on a listed building does, and the council you deal with depends on where you live, not on the nearest big town. Quarndon, for example, sits next to Allestree but comes under Amber Valley rather than Derby.
- Derby City Council Derby, Allestree, Mickleover & Littleover, Alvaston, Spondon, Chellaston
- Amber Valley Borough Council Quarndon, Belper, Ambergate, Ripley, Heanor, Alfreton, Somercotes, Duffield
- Erewash Borough Council Ilkeston, Long Eaton, Sandiacre, Borrowash, Little Eaton
- Derbyshire Dales District Council Matlock, Wirksworth, Ashbourne
- South Derbyshire District Council Melbourne, Hilton, Repton & Willington, Swadlincote
- Chesterfield Borough Council Chesterfield
- North East Derbyshire District Council Clay Cross
- Bolsover District Council Bolsover, South Normanton
- North West Leicestershire District Council Castle Donington
Parts of Boulton Moor, beside Alvaston, come under South Derbyshire. We will point you in the right direction at the survey.
Wherever you are
Every job starts with a visit to measure the room and look at the walls, floor, pipes and wiring, followed by a written quote at no charge. You can buy the kitchen through us, or have us fit units from Howdens, Wren, Magnet, IKEA, B&Q, Wickes or an independent showroom. Our joiners fit the cabinetry, worktops and panels, and partner electricians, plumbers and tilers from Derbyshire Specialists Group handle their parts, on one quote and with one person to deal with.
Fitting units you have already bought usually takes two to five days; a full renovation with new plumbing, wiring and tiling is more like one to three weeks. Finance is available through Ideal4Finance, subject to status. We work Monday to Saturday, 7:30am to 6pm.
More than kitchens
The same joiners cover the rest of the house, across the same areas. In Alfreton we also have a page for fitted wardrobes in Alfreton.
- Fitted wardrobes Made-to-measure sliding, hinged, mirrored and walk-in wardrobes, including alcove builds.
- Staircases New and replacement staircases, handrails and balustrades.
- Stud & media walls Stud partitions and media walls with cable routes and recessed shelving.
- Internal doors & skirting Doors hung, frames fitted, architraves and skirting boards finished.
- Wooden gates Driveway, side and garden gates made to measure in timber.
- Finance Spread the cost of a larger project, subject to status.
Questions about where we work
How do I know if you cover my address?
Look for the nearest town or village on this page; each takes in the smaller places and estates around it. If you still cannot tell, ring 01332 215505 with your postcode.
What if I live just outside the places listed?
Ring us before you rule yourself out. The list shows where we work most, not a hard boundary, and whether we can take your job on depends on exactly where you are and what it involves.
Do you need to see the room before giving a price?
Yes. We measure the room ourselves and look at the walls, floor and services before we put a figure in writing, because those are what decide how long a fit takes. The visit and the written quote cost nothing.
Can you fit a kitchen I have already bought?
Yes. We fit units from any supplier, including Howdens, Wren, Magnet, IKEA, B&Q and Wickes. For a smaller kitchen, fit-only usually starts from about £1,500 to £2,500.
