DOOR FIXTURES & FITTINGS

We have all the necessary tools for a one person installation - drill, screwdriver, chisel, tape measure, pencil, wood filler, screws, hinges, handles, and locks. If we are replacing an old door, we will inspect the door frame for any signs of damage or wear that may require repair or ensure that we do not attempt to place any fittings in a weakend are of the frame.

We will firstly position the door in the frame and mark the placement of the hinges and then use a chisel to create recesses for the hinges to sit flush with the edge of the door. Once that is done we will secure the hinges in place with screws.

The next step is to install the Handles and Locks. We will agreee this with you as you may have particular prefences on heights and position but once agreed we will pencil mark the precise locations. We then drill holes for the handles and mortise for the lock mechanism before carefully fixing the handles and locks into place using the provided screws.

We then raise and prop the door so that we can fix it to the hinges and the check and ake any necessary adjustments to the hinges, handles, or lock mechanism to ensure proper functionality.

ARCHITRAVE FITTING

Architraves are an essential architectural feature that adds a touch of elegance and style to any door. They not only enhance the appearance of the doorway but also help to protect the door from damage.

Before we start fitting architraves, we measure the width and height of the door, as well as the depth of the door jamb. This information will ensure that the architrave fits perfectly and looks aesthetically pleasing when installed. Selecting the right architrave is crucial for a successful installation not just in terms of size fit but consider the style of your home and the overall design aesthetic you wish to achieve. There are various architrave designs available, from simple and modern to more intricate and traditional. If you are having a single new door as part of a new extension it may be tricky to find an exact match depending on the age of your how and the age of existing architraves. You may have a couple of options; either to try and get a close match, or go the other way and make you new entrance a stand statement entrance.

A stop scribe is a notch in the architrave that allows it to fit snugly against the door jamb. To create a stop scribe, we hold the architrave against the jamb, ensuring it's aligned correctly, and use a pencil to mark where the edge of the jamb meets the architrave. Then, we use a chisel to remove the marked section, creating the stop scribe.

Before fixing the architrave we aways perform a dry fit to ensure everything aligns properly. We place the architrave against the door and check that the fit is snug and seamless. We make any necessary adjustments then. Once we are happy we will apply a thin layer of adhesive onto the back of the architrave so that the glue doesn't become part of the feature.

We apply gentle pressure to secure it in place before finally securing it with small nails, countersunk into the door jamb. Finally we will filland nail holes with wood filler. Once dry it can be sanded to create a smooth and polished finish realy for painting or varnishing.

SKIRTINGBOARD FITTERS NEAR ME

If you need a new skirting board installing our joiners can fit a variety of styles & sizes

SKIRTING BOARD INSTALLATION

Skirting boards are an essential component in any home or building. They not only provide a finished look to the interior but also protect the walls from damage and act as a barrier against moisture and dirt. Fitting skirting boards can be fiddly especially at corners but our experienced joiners will make light work of it.

We start by measuring the length of each wall so we know how this compares to the lengths of skirting we have to minimse the seperate sections and therefore visible joints. With this information we will then use a miter saw  to cut the skirting boards at a 45-degree angle for corners. For straight walls, we will cut the boards to the measured length.

If your skirting boards aer MDF they will already have a fnish applied but for untreated wood we will sand them before fixing to smooth out any rough edges or imperfections. They can be painted or varnished at this stage but they would need to be completely dry before we install them.

When ready for installation we apply a strong adhesive on the back of the skirting boards, ensuring even coverage. This will help in securing the boards firmly to the wall even if the wall is slightly uneven in places.

We start fixing from one corner of the room. Press them firmly against the wall and hold for a few seconds to allow the adhesive to bond. For added support, especially for uneven walls we will use countersunk nails or screws to secure the boards in place so that we can fill the holes with wood filler for a seamless finish.

  • Which is the best internal door to fit?

If budgets allow a solid wooden door will provide you with a long lasting door that will have strong handle and lock fittings and will look good for many years. Cheaper doors are cheaper due to using cheaper materials and less of them. Hollow doors are very cheap but provide little acoustic benefit and poor depth for screw fitting handles and locks.

WOODEN DOORS

Common materials that we handle for internal doors include solid wood, engineered wood, and MDF (medium-density fiberboard). Solid wood doors are known for their durability and timeless appeal but can be more expensive. Engineered wood doors, made from multiple layers of wood veneer, provide a more cost-effective option while still maintaining a similar appearance to solid wood. MDF doors, are the most affordable option and are often used for painted doors. Ultimately, the choice of materials for internal doors depends on individual preferences and the overall design concept of the space which we can always advise on..
