Matlock is the county town of Derbyshire and the base of Derbyshire Dales District Council, which works from the Town Hall on Bank Road. The town grew up along the River Derwent and the A6, which carries on south through the gorge to Matlock Bath, and the Derwent Valley Line runs trains roughly hourly to Derby. The Peak District National Park starts just to the west, but Matlock itself sits outside its boundary.

What a hillside stone house means for your kitchen

Much of Matlock Bank went up in the late nineteenth century, when around twenty hydros drew visitors to the town for water cures. John Smedley’s hydro, now a Grade II listed building, still stands high above the centre. The homes built around it are mostly gritstone terraces and semis set along the contours of the slope, and that has a direct effect on how a kitchen goes in.

Thick stone walls are seldom straight or square. Rather than leaving gaps for sealant to cover, we scribe end panels, fillers and worktops to the actual line of the wall, pack wall cabinets so they hang level, and set base units from a laser line instead of trusting the floor. Where a back wall is cut into the hillside, we check it for damp before any units go against it.

In the smaller terraces the kitchen is often a narrow room at the rear. A single run of units with a tall larder housing can give more usable worktop than forcing in an L-shape, and a slimline dishwasher frees space for a proper preparation area.

Riverside homes and access on steep streets

Homes close to the Derwent in the town centre have a long history of flooding. After a private flood wall behind Crown Square collapsed in the storms of February 2022, the Environment Agency funded repairs to protect more than fifty homes and businesses. If your house is on that low ground, plan the kitchen with water in mind: clip-on plinths that lift away, appliances raised where the layout allows, and sockets positioned higher up the wall. Quartz and solid surface recover from a soaking far better than chipboard-core laminate or untreated timber.

Up on the Bank the challenge is getting materials in. Many streets are steep and narrow, so we note parking and the route to the kitchen at the survey. That way a three-metre worktop is never ordered for a doorway or a stepped path it cannot get through.
