Sandiacre, on the county edge

Sandiacre is a town in Erewash borough on the western bank of the River Erewash, which divides it from Stapleford in Nottinghamshire. Long Eaton adjoins it to the south and Risley to the west. The M1 crosses the A52 Brian Clough Way at Junction 25 inside the town, so Derby and Nottingham are both a short drive away. The postal address says Nottingham NG10, but Sandiacre is in Derbyshire.

Two historic cores and what they mean for a kitchen

The town has two conservation areas, both designated in 1984. Cloud Side covers the old village on the Stoney Clouds escarpment around the Grade I listed Church of St Giles, whose spire can be seen across the flat land by the river. Many of the older houses on Church Street are rendered, with plain tile roofs. Canal Side covers the Victorian development to the east, where the buildings are red brick with slate roofs. Close by is Springfield Mill, a four-storey lace factory built in 1888 and now Grade II listed.

Those two kinds of property need different approaches. In the older cottages, kitchens tend to be compact and the walls are seldom true, so slimmer wall cabinets, scribed fillers and worktops cut to the real line of the wall make the most of the space. The Victorian terraces nearer the canal usually have a long, narrow back kitchen, where a galley run uses the width well, or where opening into the back room creates a kitchen-diner with space for a table.
