A lead-mining town with a lot of old buildings

Wirksworth is a market town in the Derbyshire Dales, roughly 14 miles north of Derby, with Matlock as its post town. It grew on lead mining and stone quarrying. A Barmote Court was set up here in 1288 to regulate the lead trade, and centuries of limestone quarrying have left rock faces and cliffs around the town. A Civic Trust regeneration project launched in 1978 repaired and restored much of the historic centre and won a medal in the 1982 European Heritage Awards.

Stone walls, odd angles and a conservation area

Wirksworth’s conservation area takes in the historic town centre. It was designated in 1970 and enlarged in 1976, and it contains around 90 listed entries among nearly a thousand buildings. Across the parish, the listed buildings are built of limestone, gritstone and sandstone as well as red brick and render, and they include cottages, town houses, shops with living space above and former coaching inns.

Older stone houses bring their own set of problems for a kitchen. Thick walls and deep window reveals limit where wall cabinets can go. Walls bow and lean, floors slope, and a run of units has to be set out from a true level and then scribed back to the stone. Fixings must go into solid material, not loose pointing, so heavy wall units may need a timber batten or a different layout. Stone walls can also feel cold, so good extraction matters to keep condensation down.

Wirksworth also has an Article 4 Direction, first made in 1992 and revised in 2014, which brings specified works on affected properties under planning control. If you are planning a new vent through an outside wall or any change to the outside of the house, check with the council whether your property is covered.

Choosing units and worktops for a Wirksworth home
