Somercotes and the streets around it

Somercotes lies a couple of miles south-east of Alfreton in the Amber Valley district, close to the Nottinghamshire border, and its ward takes in Leabrooks and Lower Birchwood. It is a former pit village: by the nineteenth century more than five collieries surrounded it, and later the English Rose and Aertex clothing factories were big local employers. Lower Somercotes is the original settlement, while the upper village grew along the turnpike road that was cut through to Alfreton in the eighteenth century.

We fit kitchens right across the village and in the places that run into it, including Riddings, Leabrooks, Pye Bridge, Ironville and Birchwood. Measuring visits can be booked on any day we are open, Monday to Saturday.

What the local houses mean for a refit

The council built a good deal of housing in Somercotes. Houses went up on Victoria Street in the 1920s, on Wheatley and Smedley Avenue just before the Second World War, on the Cottage Farm estate from 1947 and on the South Spire estate from the late 1950s. Much of the oldest terraced housing was cleared in the 1960s and 1970s, so most kitchens here sit in inter-war or post-war houses rather than Victorian rows.

Those kitchens tend to be a plain rectangle with the sink under the back window, which makes them simple to plan. The catch is usually what decades of small changes have left behind: an extra socket spurred off an old circuit, a gas pipe boxed in at an awkward height, or a patch of replastering that is not quite flat. We look behind the old units at the quote stage so that levelling, moving pipes or making good is priced up front instead of discovered halfway through.

Where the room is narrow, a single galley run with tall larder units at one end often gives more usable storage than forcing in a corner carousel. In a wider kitchen, an L-shape that frees the back door and leaves space for a small table is a common choice in houses of this type.

How a Somercotes kitchen job is organised

If you have already picked units from Howdens, Wren, Magnet, IKEA, B&Q, Wickes or an independent showroom, we fit them as supplied. If you would rather we sourced the whole kitchen, we supply and fit, with worktops in laminate, quartz, granite, solid surface or solid oak, walnut or iroko.

Our joiners assemble and fix the cabinets, scribe the worktops to the walls and hang the doors and drawers. The electrical, plumbing and tiling work goes to partner electricians, plumbers and tilers from Derbyshire Specialists Group, and you have a single contact for all of it rather than three diaries to juggle. The business was set up by Liam Taylor after more than ten years in property and joinery, and the order of work reflects that: services moved first, units second, worktops and splashbacks last.

Kitchen fitting questions — Somercotes

Which parts of the Somercotes area do you work in?

All of Somercotes, upper and lower, along with Leabrooks, Birchwood, Riddings, Pye Bridge and Ironville. For an address just over the line into Nottinghamshire, ring 01332 215505 with the postcode and we can tell you.

What should I budget for a kitchen in Somercotes?

Fitting units you have bought yourself usually comes to roughly £1,500 to £2,500 for a smaller kitchen. If we supply everything and bring in the electrician, plumber and tiler as well, the total runs into several thousand pounds, and for a large or high-specification room it can reach tens of thousands. Appliances and the worktop material make the biggest difference. Finance through Ideal4Finance is available, subject to status.

Do I need anything from the council?

Swapping a kitchen within the existing room does not normally need planning permission. Planning for Somercotes sits with Amber Valley Borough Council. Taking out a wall, particularly a load-bearing one, or adding an extension brings building regulations into play, and Amber Valley’s building control is provided by the Derbyshire Building Control Partnership. Somercotes is not one of the borough’s conservation areas, though neighbouring Riddings is.

Can you fit units on an uneven concrete floor?

Yes. We check a solid floor with a long level before anything goes in, because a fall of a few millimetres across a run of base units shows up as a gap under the worktop. Adjustable legs take up small differences; anything larger is dealt with before the cabinets are fixed.

How long will we be without a kitchen?

A fit-only job normally takes two to five working days. If pipes and cables are being moved and the walls tiled, allow one to three weeks. You will know in advance which days the water or power will be off.
