Chesterfield sits where the Rivers Rother and Hipper meet, around 24 miles north of Derby and 11 miles south of Sheffield, and is run by Chesterfield Borough Council. It is on the Midland Main Line, and the M1 runs along its eastern side with junctions at Heath, Markham Vale and further north at Junction 30. Most people know it for the Crooked Spire of St Mary and All Saints, which is twisted by 45 degrees and leans about nine and a half feet from true.

Matching the kitchen to the house

Along Chatsworth Road in Brampton, one of Chesterfield’s earliest suburbs, the houses date mostly from the 1870s to the early 1900s, and are largely two-storey brick terraces and semis. Where the kitchen is a narrow room at the back, the usual choices are a galley layout that keeps the back door clear, or taking the wall down between kitchen and dining room to make one usable room. Old lath-and-plaster ceilings and uneven floors are common in houses of this age, so we allow for levelling and for scribing panels to walls that are not square.

Newbold has a similar mix of Victorian and Edwardian terraces alongside newer family homes, while Walton is better known for 1930s semis, modern detached houses and new-build estates. In a 1930s semi the kitchen is often a small room at the back with a separate dining room beside it; knocking through, or extending into the garden, is the change people ask about most. In the newer houses the brief is more often a better-quality replacement for the original kitchen, an island, or more storage.

In the town centre conservation area, residential use is limited and much of it is above shops. Getting long worktops up a narrow staircase to a first or second floor flat takes planning, and we measure access as well as the room so that nothing arrives too long to get through the door.
