Working in Ilkeston and the Erewash valley

Ilkeston lies on the River Erewash, with its eastern edge on the Nottinghamshire border, and comes under Erewash Borough Council. Coal mining, iron working and lace built the town, and the Stanton Ironworks was for years one of its biggest employers. Henry III granted the charter for its fair in 1252, the Erewash Canal runs past on its way to Langley Mill, and the Grade II* listed Bennerley Viaduct, between Ilkeston and Awsworth, reopened to walkers and cyclists in January 2022. The railway station, opened in April 2017 on the site of the old Ilkeston Junction and Cossall station, has trains between Nottingham and Leeds.

Our joiners fit kitchens throughout the town and in Kirk Hallam, Cotmanhay, Hallam Fields, West Hallam, Stanton-by-Dale and Dale Abbey.

Terraces, flats and the town-centre conservation area

Census figures for Ilkeston Central show more than a third of homes are terraced and almost a fifth are flats, well above the Erewash average. Erewash Borough Council made much of the town centre a conservation area in 1979 and extended it in 1995. It takes in Bath Street, the Market Place, South Street and Wharncliffe Road, where most buildings are Victorian or Edwardian, in red or orange brick with stone dressings and Welsh slate roofs, and many shops on Bath Street have living space above.

For a flat over a shop, the practical questions are access and services. Units and worktops have to come up a staircase, so we measure the stairs and landing as well as the room, and we check where the waste can run before fixing the sink position. In a terraced house the kitchen is usually a slim room at the back; a single straight run with tall storage at one end, or opening into the back room, are the two usual ways to get more out of it.

Kirk Hallam, Cotmanhay and post-war semis

Kirk Hallam grew quickly in the 1950s and 1960s, beginning with public housing built by Ilkeston Corporation, and semi-detached houses now make up nearly two thirds of homes in the ward. Cotmanhay has a closer split between terraces and semis. Kitchens in houses of that era are often a modest square room beside a separate dining room, which suits an L-shaped plan or a knock-through to make a family kitchen-diner. Original pipework and wiring may need replacing at the same time, and that is far easier while the room is empty.

Derbyshire Joinery Specialists is part of Derbyshire Specialists Group, run by founder Liam Taylor, whose background covers ten years and more in property and joinery. Our joiners fit the units, worktops and appliances, and partner electricians, plumbers and tilers from the group do their parts under the same quote. Bring us a kitchen from Howdens, Wren, Magnet, IKEA, B&Q, Wickes or an independent and we will fit it, or we can supply it, with worktops in laminate, quartz, granite, solid surface or solid oak, walnut or iroko.

Kitchen fitting questions — Ilkeston

What part of Ilkeston do you cover?

The whole town, along with Kirk Hallam, Cotmanhay, Hallam Fields, West Hallam, Stanton-by-Dale and Dale Abbey. Not sure about your street? Call 01332 215505 and we can let you know.

What is the typical cost of a kitchen in Ilkeston?

Installation alone for a smaller kitchen, using units you have bought, is roughly £1,500 to £2,500. If we supply the kitchen and co-ordinate all the trades, the total ranges from several thousand pounds to tens of thousands, set mostly by the size of the room, the finish of units and worktops and the appliance list. Finance is offered through Ideal4Finance, subject to status.

Which council deals with planning and building control in Ilkeston?

Erewash Borough Council, not Amber Valley. Replacing a kitchen within the same room does not normally need planning permission, but structural changes such as removing a load-bearing wall, or adding an extension, need building regulations approval. External alterations in the town-centre conservation area may need extra consent, so check with Erewash before changing windows or doors there.

Can you fit a kitchen in a flat above a shop?

Yes. We measure the stairs and landing as well as the kitchen, plan worktop lengths that can be carried up, and check how the waste and any extractor duct can leave the building before the layout is fixed.

How long does a kitchen take to fit?

A fit-only job with an unchanged layout is normally finished in two to five days. Full renovations that include new plumbing, rewiring and tiling usually take one to three weeks, depending on the size of the room.
