Working in South Normanton
South Normanton is a large village two miles east of Alfreton, but unlike its neighbour it falls within Bolsover District rather than Amber Valley. It sits right beside Junction 28 of the M1, where the A38 begins its run towards Derby, and the East Midlands Designer Outlet on Mansfield Road is on the edge of the village. St Michael’s church stands on the hilltop in the old centre.
Before 1888 this was a small farming hamlet. Mining became the main industry from around 1921, and the local pits closed between 1952 and 1969. We cover the whole village and the places close by, including Pinxton, Blackwell, Westhouses, Newton and Tibshelf.

Two kinds of kitchen we see most
The first is in the council housing built after the Second World War, such as the homes along Lansbury Drive. These are practical, square-ish rooms, and the usual question is whether to keep the kitchen where it is or open it into the dining room behind. Opening up means checking whether the dividing wall is load-bearing, which decides whether a steel or lintel is needed and whether building control has to be involved.
The second is in the newer housing. South Normanton saw a huge amount of infilling after the 1980s, and many of those homes have a kitchen-diner at the back with patio or bi-fold doors. Owners often want to replace a basic developer kitchen with something more durable, add an island or peninsula, or move the hob away from the doors. Plasterboard walls on timber or metal studs need proper fixings for wall cabinets, and we check what the walls are made of before we hang anything heavy.
Both types benefit from planning the appliances early. An integrated fridge-freezer, a range cooker or a second oven changes the run of units more than people expect, so we work from the actual appliance dimensions rather than a standard width.
Who does what on the job
Our own joiners handle the carpentry: carcasses, end panels, plinths, cornice, doors, and worktop cutting for sinks and hobs, whether the tops are laminate, quartz, granite, solid surface or solid oak, walnut or iroko. For the rest, we bring in partner electricians, plumbers and tilers through Derbyshire Specialists Group, all priced in the same quote. Liam Taylor, who founded the business after a decade and more in property and joinery, keeps the trades in the right order so nobody is waiting on someone else.
Bought your units from Howdens, Wren, Magnet, IKEA, B&Q or Wickes? We fit those. Prefer us to supply? We can do that too.
Kitchen fitting questions — South Normanton
Do you cover South Normanton and the nearby villages?
Yes. Along with South Normanton itself we work in Pinxton, Blackwell, Westhouses, Newton and Tibshelf. If your address is anywhere around Junction 28 and you are not sure, call 01332 215505.
How much does a new kitchen cost to fit?
To install units you already own, a smaller kitchen typically costs from around £1,500 to £2,500. A complete supply-and-fit with the electrician, plumber and tiler included ranges from several thousand pounds up to tens of thousands, depending on the size of the room, the finish you choose and the appliances. Finance is available through Ideal4Finance, subject to status.
Which council deals with planning and building regulations here?
South Normanton is in Bolsover District, so Bolsover District Council is the planning authority, not Amber Valley. A like-for-like kitchen replacement does not usually need planning permission. Structural work such as removing a load-bearing wall needs building regulations approval, which for Bolsover is handled by the Derbyshire Building Control Partnership. The village centre is not a conservation area, but Carnfield Hall nearby is covered by one.
Can you replace the builder’s kitchen in a newer house?
Yes. Many owners swap a basic developer kitchen for sturdier units and a better worktop once they have lived with the layout for a while and know what annoys them. If the house is still under its new-build warranty, check whether the warranty provider needs to be told about changes to plumbing or electrics before work starts.
Can you add an island to an open-plan kitchen?
Usually, as long as there is enough clearance around it to open the dishwasher and oven doors and still walk past. We also check whether a sink or hob in the island would need a new waste run or power feed under the floor, as that can add to the cost.
