Spondon, on the eastern edge of Derby
Spondon sits on the north slope of the Derwent valley on Derby’s eastern side. It is part of the city now, but it was a village for centuries before that: it is recorded in the Domesday Book, and St Werburgh’s Church dates from around 1390, replacing an earlier church lost to fire. The A52 Brian Clough Way cuts through, giving a quick run west into Derby and east towards the M1 and Nottingham, and the station on the Derby to Nottingham line still has a limited service.
Chapel Street and Sitwell Street are the shopping streets, and the historic core around them has been a conservation area since 1975. Beyond it, suburban housing spreads out on every side. Older houses in the conservation area
The conservation area holds some notable buildings: The Homestead, built in 1740, the timber-framed Grange from the sixteenth century, and several eighteenth-century houses.
