Swadlincote sits around 12 miles south-west of Derby and 5 miles south-east of Burton upon Trent, close to where the A514 and A511 cross. It grew on coal and clay. Collieries, brickworks and potteries shaped the town, and its fireclay made it a major producer of salt-glazed pipes after the Public Health Act 1875 created demand for proper drainage. Coal was worked here from at least the 13th century; the last pit, Rawdon Colliery, closed in 1993, and Sharpe’s Pottery Museum now tells the town’s ceramic story.

Older red-brick houses

Around the town centre, Swadlincote has rows of late Victorian and Edwardian red-brick houses, including the decorative terraces on Church Street and workers’ cottages on Hill Street and Russell Street. In houses like these the kitchen is often a narrow room behind the main house, sometimes with a door to the yard, which suits a galley or L-shaped layout.
