Long Eaton and the streets we cover

Long Eaton lies just north of the River Trent in the Erewash borough of Derbyshire, about nine miles south-east of Derby. Its postcode is NG10 and its post town Nottingham, yet it is very much a Derbyshire town. Junction 25 of the M1 sits on its north-western edge, the Erewash Canal passes through the middle, and the station on the Midland Main Line has East Midlands Railway and CrossCountry services.

We fit kitchens in every part of the town, along with Wilsthorpe, Sawley, Breaston, Draycott and Toton. Derbyshire Joinery Specialists belongs to Derbyshire Specialists Group, founded by Liam Taylor, who has spent over a decade working in property and joinery. On a full refit our joiners are joined by the group’s partner electricians, plumbers and tilers, priced together and run by one person, so you are not chasing four firms.

Lace-era terraces and how to plan the kitchen

Long Eaton expanded very fast in the second half of the nineteenth century as lace factories rose along the canal. By 1907 there were almost 1,400 lace machines in the town. Streets such as King Street and Prince Street filled with tightly packed Victorian terraces in red brick, many with decorative brickwork on the front. When lace went out of fashion in the 1920s, those skills moved into upholstery, and the town is still known for quality sofa and chair making.

In a terrace of that age the kitchen is normally at the back of the house and long rather than wide. A galley layout, with units down both sides and a tall housing for the fridge-freezer at the far end, is often the most practical answer. If the room feels cramped, opening it into the back room gives space for a table or a short peninsula, though it means removing a wall that may be structural.

Floors in these houses are frequently suspended timber, and after a century they rarely run level. We check the floor before setting out units, because a dip in the middle of the room changes how the plinths and any island sit.

Fit-only or the complete job

Plenty of people in Long Eaton buy their units from Howdens, Wren, Magnet, IKEA, B&Q, Wickes or an independent showroom and just need them installed. We fit kitchens from any of those. Let us measure before you order, so that a boxed-in pipe, a chimney breast or a radiator that has to move is picked up early rather than on fitting day.

If you would prefer us to supply the whole kitchen, we can source units and a worktop to suit, from laminate through quartz, granite and solid surface to oak, walnut or iroko, and manage it from strip-out to final snagging. Fitting supplied units usually takes two to five days; a full renovation with new pipework, wiring and tiling takes one to three weeks.

Kitchen fitting questions — Long Eaton

Do you cover Sawley, Breaston and the rest of NG10?

Yes. Besides Long Eaton itself we work in Wilsthorpe, Sawley, Breaston, Draycott and Risley, and across the county line in Toton. If you are unsure whether your street is within reach, phone us on 01332 215505.

What does a new kitchen cost in Long Eaton?

For a smaller kitchen where you have bought the units, our fitting price usually lands between roughly £1,500 and £2,500. Supplying and installing everything, including plumbing, electrics and tiling, ranges from several thousand pounds to tens of thousands, depending mainly on the size of the room, the quality of the units and the appliances. Every price follows a free site visit and comes in writing, and Ideal4Finance can spread the cost, subject to status.

Is planning permission needed for a kitchen in Long Eaton?

Usually not for a like-for-like replacement. Erewash Borough Council is the planning authority. The town has two conservation areas, Long Eaton Town Centre and Long Eaton Lace Factories, where external changes, demolition and tree work are controlled more tightly. Removing a load-bearing wall or building an extension needs Building Regulations approval, which Erewash provides through a building control service it shares with neighbouring Nottinghamshire councils.

Is my home at flood risk, and should that change the kitchen?

The Environment Agency’s Trent defences, which run 27 kilometres from Sawley to Colwick and opened in 2012, reduced the flood risk across large areas of Long Eaton. There is also a flood warning area for the River Erewash covering properties around Bennett Street. If you are in a warning area, removable plinths, appliances on raised housings and a quartz or solid-surface worktop near the sink will recover far better than chipboard-backed laminate.

Should I knock my terrace kitchen through to the back room?

It often works well, giving a kitchen-diner with daylight from two windows. The wall between the rooms is often load-bearing, so it needs a properly sized beam and Building Regulations sign-off. We can look at it during the free survey and tell you whether the layout justifies the extra work.
