Heanor homes and the kitchens inside them

Heanor is an Amber Valley town built on a hill, about eight miles north-east of Derby and nine and a half west-north-west of Nottingham. Its name means the place at the high ridge. Coal and ironstone were worked around the town for generations, alongside silk, cotton, hosiery and lace, and the Market Place was laid out in the 1890s after the Heanor Hall estate was broken up. Shipley Country Park borders the town to the south and west, and Langley Mill station, a mile east, has trains towards Nottingham and Sheffield.

We fit kitchens across Heanor and in Loscoe, Marlpool, Langley Mill, Aldercar, Shipley and Smalley. Census figures show the two halves of town differ: Heanor West has a larger share of terraced houses than most of the borough, while semi-detached homes make up close to half of Heanor East.

Getting the most from a terrace kitchen

Kitchens in older terraced houses are often long and narrow, sometimes in a rear extension with the bathroom behind or above. In that kind of room every centimetre counts. Shallower wall units over the sink, a slimline dishwasher, pull-out larder storage and a corner carousel can make a galley feel far less cramped. Running the worktop through under a window instead of stopping short also adds useful space. We also check how far the floor falls and whether the side walls run parallel, because a long galley exaggerates both and the units have to be set out to suit.

The other common route is joining the kitchen to the back room. Taking out that wall gives space for a table or a breakfast bar, but the wall is often load-bearing and will need a properly sized beam, temporary propping and building control sign-off. We can measure for both options and price them side by side so you can see what the extra work adds.

Semis, solid floors and open-plan changes

In a semi-detached house the kitchen tends to be squarer, which suits an L or U shape. Many owners want the kitchen to flow into the dining room, which brings the same structural questions as a terrace knock-through and sometimes means moving a radiator or a door. If the floor is solid concrete, new pipes and cables have to be chased in or run behind the plinths, so we plan where the sink and appliances can go before any units are ordered.

Our joiners are part of Derbyshire Specialists Group, the business Liam Taylor built on over ten years of property and joinery work. They fit the carcasses, worktops and appliances, and the group’s partner electricians, plumbers and tilers take care of their own trades, all quoted together. We fit kitchens from Howdens, Wren, Magnet, IKEA, B&Q, Wickes and independents, or supply one for you, with worktops in laminate, quartz, granite, solid surface or solid oak, walnut and iroko.

Kitchen fitting questions — Heanor

Do you fit kitchens in Heanor and the villages nearby?

We do. Heanor, Loscoe, Marlpool, Langley Mill, Aldercar, Shipley and Smalley are all covered. If you are on the edge of that patch, call 01332 215505 and we will check your postcode.

What price range should I expect in Heanor?

Fitting a smaller kitchen from units you have already bought is around £1,500 to £2,500. A complete supply-and-fit with every trade involved costs from several thousand pounds into the tens of thousands, depending on the size of the room, the specification you choose and which appliances you go for. Ideal4Finance can spread the cost, subject to status.

Who approves structural work on a kitchen in Heanor?

Heanor falls under Amber Valley Borough Council. A new kitchen in the existing room does not normally need planning permission, but taking out a load-bearing wall or building a rear extension needs building regulations approval. Larger extensions may also need planning permission, so check before you commit.

Is it worth knocking the kitchen into the back room?

In many terraces and semis it is the biggest improvement you can make, because it turns two cramped rooms into one usable space. It costs more than a straight swap and takes longer, so we price it separately and let you compare.

How long does a kitchen fit take?

Supplied units in an unchanged layout usually take two to five days. A full renovation with re-plumbing, rewiring and tiling runs to one to three weeks, and a knock-through adds time for the beam and plastering.
