Chellaston, on Derby’s southern edge
Chellaston is a suburban village on the southern edge of Derby. It became part of the city in 1968, when its parish was abolished and merged with Derby and neighbouring parishes. It borders Shelton Lock to the north and South Derbyshire to the south, and the A514 runs through it as Derby Road before becoming Swarkestone Road at the High Street crossroads. Beyond the southern outskirts lie the A50 and Swarkestone.
It was once one of the biggest producers of mined alabaster in the country, and the poorer grades were sold as gypsum and carried along the local canals. The site of the old brickworks is now a local nature reserve, and St Peter’s Church, with fifteenth-century origins, was largely rebuilt in 1842.

Three generations of housing
Chellaston grew steadily between 1880 and 1950, then faster after the war, with houses built around Springfield Road and St Peter’s Road among other places. By the 1990s larger estates had gone up around Sutton Avenue, Maple Drive and Parkway, and around a thousand homes have since been built on the west side, close to the line of the filled-in Derby Canal.
That timeline matters for kitchens. Post-war houses usually have a separate kitchen and dining room, and opening them into one is the most common larger project. Kitchens in the 1990s houses are reaching the end of their first life: doors are tired, hinges have dropped and the worktop has swollen around the sink. A straight swap into the existing layout is often all that is needed, and that is the job where a fit-only service saves most.
In the newest homes the kitchen-diner is already open plan, and owners tend to want to improve on what the developer installed, replacing a standard laminate worktop with quartz, adding an island with power, or adding tall units for storage the original design left out.
How we run a Chellaston kitchen fit
We start with a site visit, measure every wall and check where the water, waste and power come in, because moving a sink across the room on a solid ground floor is a bigger job than it first sounds. The written quote then sets out what is included and how long the fit should take.
Liam Taylor founded the business after more than ten years working in property and joinery. Our joiners fit the units, worktops and panels, while partner electricians, plumbers and tilers handle the trades that need them, so you have one quote and one contact from strip-out to handover.
Kitchen fitting questions — Chellaston
Which areas around Chellaston do you work in?
All of Chellaston and the DE73 streets around it, plus Shelton Lock, Swarkestone, Aston-on-Trent, Weston-on-Trent and Barrow upon Trent. Call 01332 215505 to confirm your address.
What is a realistic price for a Chellaston kitchen?
If you already have the units, the fitting labour for a smaller kitchen is typically £1,500 to £2,500. A full supply-and-fit with plumbing, electrics and tiling usually runs from several thousand pounds upwards, and large rooms with stone worktops and integrated appliances can reach tens of thousands. Finance is available through Ideal4Finance, subject to status.
Which council handles building regulations for Chellaston?
Chellaston is part of Derby, so planning and building regulations sit with Derby City Council. Swapping your kitchen within the same room normally needs no planning permission. Taking out a structural wall to create a kitchen-diner, or building an extension, needs building regulations approval. If your home is just over the boundary to the south, check with South Derbyshire District Council instead.
Can you replace just the doors and worktops on a 1990s kitchen?
We can, provided the carcasses are sound and level. Many from that era are chipboard and have suffered around the sink and dishwasher, so we check them before quoting. If the boxes are swollen or the layout no longer suits you, a full replacement is usually better value than new doors on old units.
Can you add an island to an open-plan new-build kitchen?
Usually, yes. An island with a hob or sockets needs power run to it, and a sink needs water and a waste with enough fall, so the floor construction decides how easy it is. We check that at the visit and give you options, from a simple storage island to one with full services.
