Kitchens in Ambergate and the hamlets around it
Ambergate is a small Amber Valley village about six miles south of Matlock, built at the spot where the River Amber joins the Derwent. Until the early nineteenth century the place was known as Toadmoor. The railway came through in 1840, George Stephenson built lime kilns beside the line, and from 1876 Richard Johnson and Nephew ran a wireworks by the river. The village still has a station on the Derwent Valley Line, and the A6 and A610 junction puts it within easy reach for our joiners.
Alongside the village we fit kitchens in Sawmills, Ridgeway, Bullbridge, Nether Heage, Alderwasley and Crich. Shining Cliff Woods, Thacker’s Woods and Crich Chase border Ambergate. Where a home is reached by a tight drive or a flight of steps, we check the route in for long worktops and tall larder units when we come to measure.

Thinking about a new kitchen in Ambergate? We will come out, look at the room and the access, and put a written price in your hands.
Designing a kitchen on low ground by the river
Part of Ambergate lies in the Environment Agency flood warning area for the River Derwent, which names the A6, Derby Road, the Hurt Arms, the Post Office and properties around Ripley Road. In the February 2022 storms the cricket ground where the two rivers meet was under water.
If your kitchen sits on that low ground, it pays to plan for water from day one. We can build the carcasses from moisture-resistant board, stand base units on adjustable legs with clip-on plinths that pull off for drying, keep sockets and appliance isolators above worktop height and suggest a tiled or vinyl floor in place of timber. Designed in at the start, these choices add little to the bill and can save a full refit after a flood.
Stone walls and sloping sites
St Anne’s Church was built in 1891 and 1892 from sandstone quarried at nearby Ridgeway. Where a house is built from stone of that kind, the walls are seldom flat or plumb, so we scribe panels and worktops to the real line of the wall and level each unit individually instead of trusting the floor.
A house cut into a hillside brings its own checks. The back wall of a kitchen set against rising ground can hold damp, so we look for staining or salts before anything is boarded, tiled or hidden behind cabinets. If a wall needs treatment, it is far cheaper to deal with before the new kitchen goes in than after.
Who does the work
Derbyshire Joinery Specialists is part of Derbyshire Specialists Group, founded by Liam Taylor, who has spent over ten years in joinery and property. Our joiners handle the cabinetry, worktops and appliance housings, and the group’s partner electricians, plumbers and tilers carry out their parts of the job, so a village household is not left chasing four firms for dates.
We are happy to fit a kitchen from Howdens, Wren, Magnet, IKEA, B&Q, Wickes or an independent maker, or to source one for you. Worktops range from laminate through quartz, granite and solid surface to oak, walnut or iroko. Fitting supplied units normally takes two to five days, and a full strip-out with new plumbing, wiring and tiling one to three weeks.
Kitchen fitting questions — Ambergate
Do you cover Ambergate and the nearby hamlets?
Yes. Ambergate itself, plus Sawmills, Ridgeway, Bullbridge, Nether Heage, Alderwasley and Crich. For anywhere else along the A6 or A610 corridor, phone 01332 215505 and we can tell you whether it is in reach.
How much is a new kitchen in Ambergate likely to cost?
If you have bought the units, our fitting price for a smaller kitchen is typically about £1,500 to £2,500. A supply-and-fit project that includes all the trades starts at several thousand pounds and can reach tens of thousands; size, the specification of units and worktops, and your appliance choices decide where you land. You can spread the cost through Ideal4Finance, subject to status.
Will I need planning permission or building regulations?
A like-for-like kitchen in the same room generally needs neither. Amber Valley Borough Council is the authority to approach if you are removing a structural wall, moving a kitchen into an extension or altering drainage. Ambergate is not one of the borough’s conservation areas, though neighbouring Alderwasley, Whatstandwell, Fritchley and Crich are, and different rules can apply to homes there.
Can you make a kitchen more resistant to flooding?
Yes. Moisture-resistant carcasses, removable plinths on adjustable legs, raised electrical points and a water-tolerant floor all help a kitchen recover faster if the Derwent comes up. We will suggest what suits your house and budget at the survey.
How will long worktops get into a house up a steep drive?
We check access when we measure. Laminate and timber lengths can be carried in and cut on site, while stone and quartz are templated after the units are fitted and delivered in pieces sized for the route in, with joints planned where they will be least noticeable.
