Alvaston sits on the A6 about three miles south-east of Derby city centre, with the River Derwent forming its northern edge and Alvaston Park running alongside the water. The main shops gather where London Road meets the A5111 ring road, and the old village still centres on St Michael and All Angels’ Church. To the south, Boulton Moor stretches out towards Chellaston and Aston-on-Trent.

The housing changes as you move through it. Crewton and Wilmorton have parallel streets of Victorian terraces, there are larger Edwardian villas in the older part of the village, and a great deal of 1930s semi-detached housing sits alongside a big post-war council estate. Making a galley kitchen work harder

Narrow kitchens running off the back of the house are typical of terraces and many inter-war semis. The length is usually there; the problem is width. Two full runs of units can leave a walkway too tight to open the dishwasher and stand at the sink at the same time, so we measure the clear floor between the runs before anything is ordered.

A few choices make a noticeable difference. Keep wall cupboards to one side so the room does not close in overhead. Put a tall larder or a housing for the oven and fridge at the end furthest from the window, and keep the rest of the run at worktop height. Pale doors and a light worktop bounce daylight down the room, and flooring laid along the length rather than across it makes the space read as longer.

Where the kitchen is simply too small, the bigger answer is removing the wall to the back room. That turns a refit into a structural project, and we will say plainly at the visit if that is where your plans are heading.

Semis, former council homes and Boulton Moor

In a 1930s semi the kitchen and dining room were normally built as separate rooms, and many owners now want them opened into one. The beam over the opening needs building regulations sign-off, and it pays to settle the layout before choosing units, so the sink, hob and any island land where water, waste and power can reach them.

Houses on the post-war estate tend to have simple, square kitchens, which usually suit a fit-only job well: a standard Howdens or Wickes range goes in without much adaptation. The newer homes at Boulton Moor are planned around open-plan kitchen-diners, where owners are often upgrading the developer’s original kitchen with quartz worktops, an island or extra tall storage.
