What fitted wardrobes cost
A good-quality, made-to-measure fitted wardrobe typically costs between £2,000 and £4,000. Size, doors and interior fittings move the figure; our wardrobe cost guide explains what drives it.
Fitted wardrobes across Chesterfield
Chesterfield grew up where the Rivers Rother and Hipper meet, about 24 miles north of Derby and 11 miles south of Sheffield, and it is best known for the Crooked Spire of St Mary and All Saints. Its bedrooms are as varied as its streets: Victorian and Edwardian terraces in Brampton and Newbold, 1930s semis in Walton, modern estates on the edge of town, and flats above the shops in the old centre.
We build wardrobes in all of them, across Brampton, Newbold, Walton, Hasland, Ashgate, Boythorpe, Spital, Tapton and Dunston, and in Brimington, Staveley, Old Whittington, Wingerworth, Holymoorside and Calow. A freestanding wardrobe leaves gaps above and beside it and rarely suits an older room with uneven walls. A fitted one is built to the exact width and height of the space, so the storage runs from floor to ceiling and wall to wall.

From Chatsworth Road terraces to Walton semis
Along Chatsworth Road in Brampton, most houses were built between the 1870s and the early 1900s, and are largely two-storey brick terraces and semis. Bedrooms of that age rarely have a straight wall or a level floor. We scribe the end panels and the top fillers to the walls and ceiling, so there are no tapering gaps, and set the base level on its own plinth, whatever the floorboards are doing. Skirting, coving and picture rails can be cut neatly around, or the wardrobe can stop short of them so the original details stay visible.
Walton is better known for 1930s semis, along with modern detached homes and new-build estates. In a 1930s semi the main bedroom often suits a single run of sliding doors across the back wall, which keeps the floor clear in front of the bed. On the newer estates, walls are usually plasterboard on studs, so a wardrobe is fixed back to the studs or with fixings made for hollow walls. Many new homes also come with a recess meant for a wardrobe, and we can fit doors and a planned interior to that space instead of a full carcass.
Flats in the town centre and getting a wardrobe upstairs
Much of the housing in the town centre conservation area is above shops, reached by narrow stairs. That is where a fitted wardrobe has a real advantage: it arrives as panels and is assembled in the bedroom, so there is no question of a large cabinet failing to get round the turn of the stairs. The same applies to any upstairs room with a tight landing.
Derbyshire Joinery Specialists is part of Derbyshire Specialists Group, set up by Liam Taylor after more than ten years working in property and joinery. Our joiners measure, make and fit every wardrobe. If you want hard-wired lighting inside it, a partner electrician from the group makes that connection.
Planning the inside, not just the doors
The doors are what you see, but the interior decides whether the wardrobe works. Long hanging for coats and dresses, double rails for shirts and trousers, drawers for folded clothes and shelves or racks for shoes all take different amounts of space, so we plan the layout around what you own rather than a standard set of fittings. A rail running side to side needs roughly 600 mm of depth for clothes to hang without catching the doors; where a recess is shallower, pull-out rails fitted front to back make better use of it.
Sliding doors suit narrow rooms and spaces where the bed sits close, while hinged doors open the whole run at once. Mirrored panels add light and save wall space, and painted or wood-effect finishes can match the rest of the room. Where there is space, the same joiners can build matching drawer units or a dressing table so the bedroom is fitted as a whole.
Making use of the space under the stairs
Liam Taylor, founder of Derbyshire Specialists Group, walks through a set of under-stairs cupboards in the clip here. They were built during a whole-house renovation in Derby: a pull-out for shoes, a larger section for coats, and fronts kept plain so the hallway stays uncluttered.
If your Chesterfield home has a triangle of wasted space below the staircase, ask about it when we come to measure for wardrobes. Pull-outs bring the back of the space within reach, and it can be finished to match the bedroom doors upstairs.

Fitted wardrobe questions — Chesterfield
Which parts of Chesterfield do you cover for fitted wardrobes?
All of the town, including Brampton, Newbold, Walton, Hasland, Ashgate, Boythorpe, Spital, Tapton and Dunston, plus Brimington, Staveley, Old Whittington, Wingerworth, Holymoorside and Calow. For anywhere else nearby, call 01332 215505 and ask.
How much does a fitted wardrobe cost in Chesterfield?
Most good-quality made-to-measure wardrobes come in at between £2,000 and £4,000. The width and height of the run, the type of doors, the finish and how much goes inside, such as drawers, extra rails or lighting, decide where yours sits. The quote is free and in writing after we have measured, and finance is available through Ideal4Finance, subject to status.
Do I need permission from Chesterfield Borough Council for a fitted wardrobe?
Normally not. A wardrobe built inside a house does not need planning permission or building regulations approval. The exception is a listed building, where alterations that affect its character may need listed building consent. The conservation area rules in the town centre and along Chatsworth Road are mainly about external changes.
Can you fit a wardrobe in a flat where furniture will not go up the stairs?
Yes. A fitted wardrobe is brought in as panels and built in the room, so narrow stairs and tight landings are not a problem. We check the access at the survey all the same, so long panels arrive in lengths that fit.
How deep does a fitted wardrobe need to be?
For clothes hanging on a rail that runs side to side, allow about 600 mm. If the space is shallower, such as a chimney recess or a narrow box room, pull-out rails that run front to back, shelving or drawers can still make good use of it.
